It's not a pleasure for everyone, mind you, to stand in the hot July sun to pick fresh berries -- after all, the savings aren't exactly extraordinary -- while sweating, batting away bugs, balancing a pail of berries, and not being able to talk on your cell phone for extended periods. But for purists, it's all great fun.
Not for me, I might note. Unlike Fat City's Jonathan Bender, who created this informative post about blueberries -- including the art of correctly picking the berries -- I have no interest in picking my own fruit when I can more comfortably buy it from someone who has done the hard work already. (Yes, it's more expensive this way, but I'm worth it). But if I were to pick berries, here are a few options -- including a couple of different choices from Jonathan's list -- to consider:
The Berry Patch, located at 223rd Street, near State Line Road, is open for picking fresh blueberries and blackberries and opens as early as 7 a.m. for fruit pickers who want to beat the afternoon heat.
Cy and Dee's Blackberry Farm at 28615 Rockville Road in Louisburg, Kansas, is open for picking. Call 913-837-2254 for more information.
Fieldstone Farm in Overbrook, Kansas is currently lush with blackberries, according to the owner's daughter, Deb McLaren. The orchards are located about 75 minutes away from Kansas City; we wrote about the operation in Fat City last year.
