4. Town Topic -- Only the oldest of the three remaining Town Topic diners -- the flagship counter restaurant at 2021 Broadway -- still serves 24-hours a day. The other two close in the early evening.
The late shift, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. is always the most interesting at 2021 Broadway, with veterans Shirley Miller and Dave White holding court behind the counter. When the bars close, the counter fills up fast with drunks, drag queens, taxi drivers, factory workers and, more recently, yuppie loft dwellers who crave a cheeseburger and tater tots after the witching hour.
3. Hayes Hamburgers & Chili -- There was a rumor, a few years ago, that a version of this iconic Northland diner was going to open near the Power & Light District, but that idea seems to have fizzled out. Still, the 55-year-old original location at 2502 Northeast Vivion Road remain is a lure for patrons who need a late-night bowl of chili or breakfast, a burger or a slab of cream pie. There's a location in Lawrence too.
2. Taqueria Mexico -- The location at 910 Southwest Boulevard serves its menu until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights only. It's pretty lively after 1 a.m.
1. Crazy Olives -- You want a nice martini with that plate of nachos, honey? This saloon at the Argosy Casino serves what one waitress calls "a hodge-podge of food" every night until 1 a.m. That includes everything from salads to chicken-fried steak to a grilled ribeye. A lot of late-night eaters like this joint because it serves booze and food well past midnight and, if you're still not sleepy, you can gamble a little on you're way out to the car.
