| It might have been the beets... |

"The Tower restaurants were like Disneyland. You accessed the restaurant through a cobblestone hallway that was set up like an international border crossing. The furnishings of all the restaurants to look like you were going to a restaurant in the country they represented. The Irish pub had a thached roof and I remember eating turtle soup. The Mongolian restaurant was like being in a colorful tent. I remember the French restaurant as being rather elegant. My memories of Sazlberg Haus were not that pleasant...(I) remember a green salad that had beets in it and was topped by a warm bacon dressing. I don't know if it was the beets or the dressing, but it was one of the grossest tasting things I have ever eaten...I could barely stop myself from throwing up."
On a happier salad dressing note: Fat City reader Deborah would like the recipe to the creamy Italian salad dressing that was served, back in the day, at the Old Stephenson's Apple Farm Restaurant. There's apparently a packaged version out there, but Deborah says it's not the same as the dressing served in the restaurant -- which closed in 2007. If someone has a recipe for the salad dressing, e-mail it to me at charles.ferruzza@pitch.com and we'll post it here on Fat City. Or Deborah might try a visit to J.L. Stephenson's Santa Fe Inn, a restaurant and saloon in Raytown owned by the son of one of the founders of the old Apple Farm Restaurant.
