The meatloaf is in the freezer, dear

  • This is your blog on meatloaf.

I'm heading out of town for a few days and I jokingly tell my wife that I've left her a meatloaf in the freezer to help tide her over until I get back.

"I hate meatloaf," she says dejectedly.

"Everyone hates meatloaf," I reply.

I won't leave a meatloaf in the freezer, but I have left a stocked pantry and fridge, along with a package of frozen ravioli and boxed mac and cheese.

I want to make sure she remembers to eat while I'm gone. It's what you do when you cook a majority of the meals in the house. But I didn't prebake a lasagna while trying to remember my hat box. I left the heavy lifting to Annie's.

Based on my decision, I did wonder if people still left their spouse meals labeled in Tupperware or a meatloaf to heat up in the oven. And from a quick straw poll of friends, male and female, it would seem the answer is no. Now whether that says we're more independent or gender roles are more fluid, I don't know.

I think it says we eat more prepared meals. And that the demands of running a household mean that cooking can take a backseat if your regular support system isn't in place.

Even without a meatloaf, I'm confident my wife won't starve. She can cook -- quite well if given the time and inclination. But this morning might be a little rough. I drank the last of the cold-pressed coffee on my way out the door. And without a morning caffeine fix, I'm not sure how anyone can survive a morning at work.

Seriously?! What's not to love about meatloaf?! Oh-Mama's Diner makes a mean plate of meatloaf but I like mine without the brown gravy and plenty of catsup!

If anyone wants the best homemade meatloaf recipe ever created, try the one from Cooks illustrated. It takes two types of beef,25 ingredients, and 14 steps,( similar to most of their recipes) but man o man it is worth it.

I'm with you, Matty. McCoy's has great meatloaf! And when I go out of town next week, Jonathan, I'm not leaving anything in the freezer for my hubby except maybe a tub of Christopher Elbow's incredible Glace ice cream. But what flavor?????

I love meatloaf. Leftover meatloaf sandwiches are the best.

I always hated meatloaf until someone convinced me to try the meatloaf McCoy's serves on Truck Stop Tuesdays. I no longer hate meatloaf.
