The Westport Plaza Farmers Market: small and expensive

As neighborhood Farmers Markets go, the former 39th Street Community Market, which moved from 39th Street this year to a parking lot at the intersection of Westport Road and Wyoming and took a new name -- the Westport Plaza Farmers Market -- is very tiny. The Wednesdays-only market, which operates from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., sells locally grown, sustainably produced vegetables, fruits, honey, eggs and organic meats. I was thrilled to be able to buy an organic cucumber -- a 1-pound cuke! -- but the $2.50 price tag was one hell of a pickle: I barely had enough cash!

Emily Tummons sings for tips
There were only five small tents set up last night, including the one shading the lady from Wellington, Missouri -- she gave me her card with all the names scratched off -- selling small jars of jams and relishes. One vendor was giving chair messages ($1 a minute), and singer-guitarist Emily Tummons was playing for tips.

It was horribly hot out, but the vendors were all nice and cheery. I scraped together enough change to buy some sweet pepper relish from the lady from Wellington, carried around my big ol' cucumber, and then went home.

So, this season the market is typically up to 8 vendors or more weekly.  They also have the Beans and Greens program for lower income customers where they can use food stamps for twice their value, getting double the fresh produce.  Charles, next time you go to a farmers' market bring more than enough to buy a 2.50 cuke and some change for relish.  If not, the market also accepts debit cards.
