Saturday Night Fever is coming back to Martini Corner, with some updated dance moves.
Club Monaco opens tomorrow night in the former Empire Room space (334 East 31st Street). The V.I.P. Party from 9 to 11 p.m. is sold out, but the club is open to the public from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Seferyn, who also owns the Velvet Dog, says the midtown bar district has needed a place to dance since the Empire Room closed in 2008. But those who aren't confident on the dance floor will find comfort in Club Monaco's aesthetic.
"We've got smoke and light and secrecy for your dance moves," Seferyn says. "Unless you're Justin Timberlake or Fred Astaire, you don't want to be a in bright room with a spotlight on you."
The music will be a mix of Top 40 hits and dance songs. The standard dress code applies -- meaning, Seferyn says, you should "look like belong in a club."
Club Monaco will be open only on Saturdays as Seferyn tries to bring back the concept of club night. If Friday night is date night with dinner and a movie, Saturday is for cutting a rug.
"Club night is Saturday night," Seferyn says. "If you want to dance on Tuesday night, we can't help you."
In about a month, he plans to open the basement bar in Club Monaco. This will be a "chill spot," he says, similar to the concept of the former Empire Room space, which had a lounge in front, a dance club in back and a downstairs bar.
"You'll swear it's a different building," Seferyn says.
Club Monaco will be open every Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. It has a full bar and a $5 cover. The nightclub will not serve food.
