To whet your appetite for The Pitch's annual Best of Kansas City issue in
October, we're celebrating our favorite 50 dishes from restaurants,
bakeries, coffeehouses, bars, drugstores, saloons, and other metro
joints. Until October 7, we'll feature one outstanding dish or beverage
each weekday. Agree with us or make your own suggestions -- just don't
come between us and these fantastic things to eat or drink.
The bakery sits to the right of the doors, just down the first aisle of the 888 International Market. Walk past the hanging ducks, and you'll see two rows of glistening buns in a pastry case. You'll be tempted by the hot dogs in a bun (think massive pigs in a blanket) or peanut-and-red-bean mochi, but you should lay both your hands on the golden Whoopie Pie-sized barbecued-pork bun.
The bun's exterior is slightly eggy, with the texture of challah bread. It's light and easily gives way to the salty, crunchy pork in the middle. The barbecue sauce is sweeter, rather than a vinegar base -- meaning this bun is close to a pork dessert. And so the dream of an all-pork meal gets closer to reality.
