Why get strudel from a local bakery when it can be shipped in from New York?
To whet your appetite for The Pitch's annual Best of Kansas City issue in October, we're celebrating our favorite 50 dishes from restaurants, bakeries, coffeehouses, bars, drugstores, saloons, and other metro joints. Until October 7, we'll feature one outstanding dish or beverage each weekday. Agree with us or make your own suggestions -- just don't come between us and these fantastic things to eat or drink.

Although we're not fans of restaurant desserts that have been shipped in, frozen, from some big corporate commissary or bakery (like many of the pretty pastries at Whole Foods or the local restaurants that serve that big ol' chocolate layer cake from Costco), there one exception to the rule may be the apple strudel on the dessert menu at Grunauer, the Viennese restaurant in the Crossroads.

Yeas, the strudel is shipped in -- but from one of the oldest bakeries in the world.

The owners of Grunauer: chef Peter Grunauer and his children Nicholas and Elizabeth wanted a very Viennese version of apple strudel, so they arranged to have the New York location of the legendary Demel -- an Austrian patissserie and confectionary that dates back to the 18th-century.

It's a beautiful dessert, with feather-light pastry, deliciously seasoned tart apples and an almost evanescent sugar glaze. Of course the staff at Grunauer heap plenty of schlag -- real whipped cream -- on top of the strudel for that added touch of decadence.

Our list so far:

No. 50: Chocolate Malt from Fox's Drug Store

No. 49: Il Parma from Bella Napoli

No. 48: Italian sausage and eggs from Cascone's Grill

No. 47: Orange Roll from Clock Tower Bakery

No. 46: Tacos de cochinita from Frida's Contemporary Mexican Cuisine

No. 45: Barbecued pork bun from 888 International Market

No. 44: Tableside fresh mozzarella from Jasper's

No. 43: Gyro Sandwich from Mr. Gyros Greek Food & Pastry

Flown in from Austrian bakery in NY. The apples are still firm and not mushy and the freshly whipped cream on mine was fluffy and not dense. This is the best I've had in town, the pastry could be a tad flakier but that's pushing the pickiness in my book.

If "FAT"ruzza likes it...it must be good no matter where it's from.

Sorry, I know what whipped cream looks and tastes like, I whipped plenty of my own (!). However there is a point in the process when you overdo it and it starts turning into butter, becomes heavy and dense. That's what I had. However, I don't want to be misunderstood, strudel was pretty good, but not so good that it needed to be flown from who knows where.

REAL whipped cream is that dense, Meesha. You're probably used to that crap that comes in the spray can, which is full of air and additives. This is manly Schlag.

Best apple dessert EVER! I don't know why the 'dis from meesha but this this was amazing. The way the apples played against the expertly made dough and the spices were on point. The whipped cream brought it all together with it's dense not too sweet edge. We stop by just for this and some top-notch coffee when we are out that way it's THAT good!

I tried it because so many people praised it.I've had better, and they weren't flown in. Whipped cream was too dense almost like sour cream.
