No: 34: Stroud's cinnamon rolls

To whet your appetite for The Pitch's annual Best of Kansas City issue, we're counting down our favorite Top 50 dishes each weekday until October 7.

Like a lot of the restaurants we've been featuring, Stroud's is probably home to a few of our favorites. The pan-friend chicken it's famous for is certainly fame-worthy; the mashed potatoes and gravy are the sort of side dish you want to bathe in. But the cinnamon rolls -- oh, those cinnamon rolls, those little balls of sugary heartburn, how I adore thee.

If you've never been to Stroud's, here's the deal: With every dinner comes a pair of steaming hot balls of biscuit dough, doused in cinnamon but less sticky than a mall cinnamon roll. Since they're as sweet as any sweet ending, the server generally asks if you'd like your rolls at the end; you do. And since the standard Stroud's meal could feed middle Africa for months, servers also ask if you'd like to take them home.

Our recommendation: Stuff one down your face at the restaurant, and save the second for the next morning. Because the only thing better than a Stroud's cinnamon roll is a Stroud's cinnamon roll for breakfast, washed down with a glass of milk. (Even better: Strategically place the glass of milk in the freezer for a few minutes while you heat and eat the roll, making said washing down even more pleasurable.)

It's the breakfast of champions, courtesy of a restaurant known for champion fried chicken. God bless America. And animal fat.

Guess I'm the only one in town that can do without the rolls. I'm all over the rest of the meal though. (guess it's because I'd just as soon have a crusty on the outside, flaky on the inside regular old bisquit!!)
