No. 30: Goat korma at New Cafe Tandoor

Don't let this animal's trashy reputation get your goat

To whet your appetite for The Pitch's annual Best of Kansas City issue, we're counting down our favorite Top 50 dishes each weekday until October 7.

Did you know that goat meat is the most widely consumed meat in the world? That's what this New York Times article says  -- also noting that Koreans believe eating goat soup increases virility. So who needs Viagra when there's saucy goat korma on the buffet at the New Cafe Tandoor in midtown?

True, for decades the reputation of the goat has been tarnished by movie depictions of the animal eating tin cans and trash. Actually, goats are picky eaters and prefer their food to be clean.

Goat meat can be tough and strong-flavored, though, which is why most restaurants that serve it often use the meat of baby goats, which can be tender as lamb. The goat meat served at New Cafe Tandoor is tender enough to deliciously soak up a rich traditional sauce, like the curry-spiced korma, which is particularly good folded between a piece of naan and dappled with a spoonful of mint chutney. Warning: the meat does, however, include the occasional small and not-so-small bone fragment. When it comes to that virility myth about goat, though, it's all about the bone.

Our list so far:

No. 50: Chocolate Malt from Fox's Drug Store

No. 49: Il Parma from Bella Napoli

No. 48: Italian sausage and eggs from Cascone's Grill

New Cafe Tandoor is disgusting. It is the worst Indian food I have had in the city. I suggest Korma. There are a few other great places for Indian but you will never be disappointed at Korma sutra.

I've been eating goat for 35 years and 3 continents, with pleasure. New Tandoor's goat falls WAY short of Taj Mahal's at 75th/Wornall. There's just no comparison. As an Indian food devotee who supports every Indian restaurant I can (so they won't close and we'll have variety), I gave New Tandoor about a dozen chances to impress me. I'm still waiting. I'm also just salivating thinking about Taj Mahal's buffet. The Tandoori chicken is also way superior to New Tandoor's overcooked version.

Love goat Korma but haven't had it at New Cafe Tandoor, I'll have to check it out. Also, love, love, love "G's" Curried Goat. Maybe people would be more inclined to eat it if it weren't so boney-but oh so worth it!

The curry goat I had at G's Jamaican Cuisine on Troost was tender and delicious. Once I sampled that I couldn't believe goat isn't eaten more widely here in the US
