I'm not sure if I'd call this joint's burgers the best, but they are very good.
And from 6 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays, all the burgers on the menu (made from McGonigle's ground beef and normally priced around $6) are $1.50 off. The burgers include a choice of
homemade fries, potato chips, cole slaw or cottage cheese and an onion
and pickle. Sorry, no lettuce or tomato.
Corner Cocktails was opened in 1978 by the late saloon owner Thomas "Mike" Walsh. Walsh's previous claim to fame was his popular Brookside watering hole the Pink Poodle (located where Charlie Hooper's is now), which he bought in 1962.
"Everyone used to go to the Pink Poodle for cocktails before driving further east to Swope Park to see a show at Starlight Theater" recalls Pat O'Neill. "Mike Walsh was a great character. Everyone called him Gorilla because he was a big, teddy-bear kind of guy."
After Walsh's death, his son Pat took over the Corner, which looks like a classic neighborhood saloon. "It attracts a real motley group of regulars," O'Neill says. "Everyone from old radio guys to judges to day laborers."
The food is inexpensive even on days without posted specials. Mondays and Thursdays are taco nights, from 6 to 11 p.m., when three tacos go for $3, and the menu also includes chicken fingers, knackwurst and hot dogs with sauerkraut.
