Five Guys Burgers And Fries is open and hopping at the Ward Parkway Center in the former McAlister's Deli space. Yesterday, the order numbers were being chanted out like auction bids as customers munched on free peanuts while waiting.

It's the third location for the burger chain in the Kansas City area, joining the restaurant at 14965 West 119th Street in Olathe and 12025 Metcalf in Overland Park.

Inspired by my apathy toward Jimmy John's, I decided to try Five Guys for the first time. The restaurant sparkles, and not just because it's new. Two

employees were sweeping the floor and wiping down the glass doors on a

continuous rotation. The cleanliness and immediate smell of burgers on

the grill when you walk in make the place very inviting.

The burgers come with a dizzying array of toppings and the choice of a Little (one patty, $3.89) or Regular Burger, Cheeseburger and Bacon Cheeseburger (two patties, $4.99). Five Guys also offers hot dogs and bacon cheese dogs. I sucked up my pride and stuck with the Little Cheeseburger. I opted for grilled onions, mustard and pickles, although I was tempted by A.1. and grilled mushrooms. It's a good burger, priced right.

It was also more than enough with a regular side of fries ($2.49) split with my wife. The fresh-cut fries are fried in peanut oil. They came out hot and salty; it was hard to wait until they cooled down enough to eat them. Crispy but not greasy, and slathered in malt vinegar (thank you, Five Guys, for recognizing the world outside ketchup), I was hunting in the paper sack to find any stragglers.

I'm not in a rush to go back, but it could easily find it's way into the rotation for the fries alone.

Five Guys is open at 8600 Ward Parkway, Suite 2155, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. You can call ahead at 816-333-4897. You can't yet order online at the restaurant. A fourth location is slated to open this fall in Oak Park Mall (95th and Quivira, Overland Park).

Five Guys makes a great burger. Nothing fancy, nothing earth-shattering, but it's a solid burger and great fries.

Thanks for reviewing 5 guys! There's one near me, but I've never been in! I may just stop in this weekend after your promising review! Thanks again!

OK, good burger. But order fries and a soft drink and try to come out of there for less than $10.00. And you have to endure the loud music and peanut shells everywhere.

Thanks to all who noted that Five Guys is well represented in the area. I was looking in a 10-mile radius on their website. I obviously should have a looked a little further out.

I don't know where you're getting that "It's the third location ... in the Kansas City area" from since it's the 7th location (2 in the Northland, 1 in Lee's Summit, 1 at the Legends, and then the three mentioned in the article).
