Messy food is in, perfection is so last decade

Let's get real, man
Messy food isn't just having a revival in the overstuffed sandwiches and other yawning productions you put in your mouth -- gloppy Sloppy Joe's, theatrically dressed hamburgers, overloaded tacos. It's also taking hold in the world of high-fashion culinary photography.

Whereas food photography was once styled with all the care and attention (maybe more so, actually) given to the shooting of haute couture fashion,

the new trend is to keep food styling a little more real, a

little less glossy. The sensually styled "food porn" photography is

giving way to what one stylist calls "a handmade" look.

A new Wall Street Journal article reports that food styling in magazines and cookbooks has taken a dramatic turn from "perfectly fussy to naturally appealing." The article goes on to say:

"The popularity of cooking shows, the eat-local movement and the growth of casual-dining restaurants are reshaping consumers' views of what makes food look appealing. Where making food look perfect was once a primary task of food stylists and photographers, the new challenge is making messy food look appetizing."

Local food stylist Gloria Gale has seen it both ways. "It all depends on the client," she says. "Some really demand perfection. Everything about the photo shoot has to be just so. The food has to look like a work of art. But the trend is definitely for a looser, more casual look. Just like everything else in our lives."
