Fierce competition comes to the Uptown Theater on Sunday night with the Greater Kansas City Bartending Competition. The city's best compete on the stage for the title of Kansas City's best bartender and $1,000. Chris Conaster (the winner in 2008, third in 2009) from Justus Drugstore and Jennifer Tosatto (third in 2008) of the Firefly Lounge have to be considered strong contenders for the competition that combines drink knowledge with a mixologist's ability to create an original cocktail.
The audience can vote via text message and gets to sample all of the finalists' drinks. SodaVie, Original Juan, Blanc Burgers + Bottles, R Bar, The Drop and Grunauer will all be at the event. The night starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15, that includes one drink and light appetizers.
It's time to go hog wild. Bacon-Fest,
the annual fundraiser for the Rehabilitation Institute, has returned.
The pork festivities at 75th Street and Wornall get under way at 11

Local food rules the night at FoodNow, an event benefiting the KC Center for Urban Agriculture, KC Community Gardens, and the Greater KC Food Policy Coalition. The dinner and celebration starts at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers on the roof of the Stowe Hardware Building (1300 W. 13th St.) before dinner made by local chefs with local produce is served on the street below. Tickets are $125, $85 of which is tax deductible.
It takes something special to be in the restaurant business for 25 years. JJ's Restaurant
in Kansas City is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a Street Party
from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Expect picnic-style fare, drink
specials and music from the Allied Saints. Let's hope for some of the restaurant's chilled watermelon soup.
This week, The Pitch's Berry Anderson outlined 20 happy hours in Kansas City. If you can't find a cheap slider or cocktail on this list you want, you're not finding it at all.
Beer-sponsored events are hard to pass up because they tend to have plenty of beer. Pabst Presents: A Spaghetti Western Death Carnival is at Knuckleheads Saloon on Saturday night. You'll get a 24-ounce can of PBR when you walk through the door for the five-band extravaganza.
