Free State ain't a place like Maine or Virgina. Free State is across the county line. Bottles from the Lawrence brewery are starting to show up on the Kansas side.
The KC Beer Blog found some first at Tipsy's in Mission. Rimann Liquors in Prairie Village has Ad Astra Ale, Copperhead Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout and Wheat State Golden. If you've spotted it somewhere else, drop a note in the comments.
Free State's Facebook page notes that "our beers are now in stock at many Johnson County retail liquor stores." Those on the Missouri side will have to wait a bit longer. I called both Royal Liquors and Berbiglia, who kindly recommended that I check out stores on the Kansas side as they were unsure when Free State would be crossing the state line.
The Free State Brewing Company began bottling in May and has been test-marketing the bottles in Lawrence this summer. Earlier this month the brewery installed additional fermentation tanks, which should boost production by an estimated 60 percent. The timeline for Free State coming to Kansas City is apparently this fall.
You can celebrate the arrival of Free State with a five-course beer pairing dinner at Johnny Cascone's Italian Restaurant tonight. The menu includes prosciutto wrapped asparagus with hop weizen, blackened salmon paired with copperhead pale ale, and tart cherry bread pudding with oatmeal stout. The meal starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call 913-381-6837 to make a reservation.
