|The secret? The potatoes are fried in bacon grease|
To whet your appetite for The Pitch's annual Best of Kansas City issue, we're counting down our favorite Top 50 dishes each weekday until October 7.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And, yes, a bowl of oatmeal or cream of wheat is probably a teensy bit healthier than this sexy combination of fried potatoes (cooked in bubbling bacon grease), sausage and cheese topped with a poached egg. But this casserole trumps oatmeal in terms of flavor, especially sided with a buttered English muffin. No wonder this is one of Classic Cookie's signature breakfast dishes.
Classic Cookie owner Leslie Stockard serves all kinds of interesting breakfast dishes at her storefront bistro in Waldo, including addictively good muffins and thickly iced cinnamon rolls. The potato-and-sausage casserole is filling enough that you probably won't be hungry during the lunch hour. If you somehow are still hungry after noon, buy one of this restaurant's homemade cookies from the pastry case and snack on that instead of another big meal.
