Richard Mabion -- a longtime activist for the urban core of Kansas City, Kansas -- doesn't think Fat City's beat reporters cross over the Kaw River frequently enough to cover the culinary scene there. "Did you know that the restaurant in the Hilton Garden Inn near the Reardon Center does a soul buffet on Thursdays?" he asked me.
I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know that the Hilton Garden Inn at 520 Minnesota Avenue even had a restaurant!
It's a nice little dining room, too, better-known for its daily breakfast buffet than for the one it offers at lunch, which changes every day. The Monday buffet, for example, offers meatloaf as a special. Fried chicken is the featured dish on Tuesdays and barbecue on Wednesdays.
"We call Wednesdays our 'Taste of Kansas City' because we offer brisket, ribs, and chicken with three different kinds of local barbecue sauces." said Wade, a server at the restaurant.
Fridays is all about fish -- baked or fried -- and Thursdays is the soul food special.
"Soul food fills you up," one of the cooks told me, showing off the trays of baked chicken in creamy gravy, stuffing, candied yams, collard greens, and ham slices glazed with brown sugar, mustard and Heinz 57 sauce. "You don't burp an hour later and get hungry again."
The soul food buffet and the fish buffet on Fridays cost $9.95. The complete buffet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays is $8.95. Patrons may also order the soup-and-salad bar only for $5.95 or the hot buffet only for $6.95.
