It would take a team of food stylists half an hour to get any egg-salad sandwich looking photogenic, assuming you didn't order it to go. The fact is, even as carefully as a friendly cook at You Say Tomato (2801 Holmes, 816-756-5097) wrapped the one seen above, he might as well have handed it over the counter without paper cover or a plate. As with many of life's pleasures, the soul-affirming bruiser of an egg-salad sandwich at You Say Tomato is best enjoyed full-on -- gripped in both hands, devoured in voracious bites without pause, felt and tasted more than seen. Also: with Swiss cheese.
Wise as it might seem to ask for your egg salad on another bread, something more likely to contain all that fresh, rich, oniony stuff, eggs need butter -- and so egg salad needs a croissant. And tomato and lettuce and the coarse mustard YST favors. And Swiss. Swiss!
After you've slid the last of it into your mouth (there's no setting this leviathan down between bites), forget mere napkins. What you need is a warm, damp washcloth. Followed by a nap.
