Adam Clay is still top dog in North Kansas City

Adam Clay is still cooking up hot dogs.
We received a phone call a week or so ago informing us that Hot Dog Haven, the little hot dog bistro located in an old Chevy dealership building on Armour Road in North Kansas City, was no more. That was doggone sad news. The proprietor, former hotel chef Adam Clay, really knew how to create a near-perfect Chicago dog.

But there's good news: Adam Clay may have left the building, but he's still in the parking lot.

That's where Clay originally started his hot dog business several years ago. It was just Clay and his cart. He thought he could really bring in the bucks -- especially during the cold winter months -- by moving into the adjacent building. But, he says, "Things didn't really work out."

You see, he had an employee running the indoor operation while he took a job as a corporate chef. That didn't pan out, so now he's moved his hot dog cart back out to the parking lot and given the business a new name: Clay's Curbside Grill.

"When the weather gets cooler, I'll have chili again," Clay says. "And I like being back outside."

Clay still puts together a terrific Chicago dog, as well as traditional and Polish dogs.

"It's a great business," he says. "But I think people prefer buying hot dogs outside."

Fantastic all-beef Chicago hot dogs! Even worth a drive from downtown KC. I'm usually a brown-bagger, but this is a great change for me and some other brown-bagger friends who come with me. And its a real bargain!

I liked when they has an inside seating, but inside or out, it's still one of the best cheapest lunch options in the area.

That's great news. I don't know why there aren't more hot dog carts in town. I would think someone would make a fortune setting one up here in Brookside.
