For 49 years, the congregation of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 12001 Wornall Road has hosted a fundraising festival that involves music, dancing and -- most important -- eating.

This week, the church hall was filled with volunteers skewering 1,800 pounds of marinated chicken pieces and 500 pounds of pork for the souvlakia kebabs that will be freshly grilled Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the church.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church's Food Festival kick off tomorrow night at 6 and runs until 10 p.m. The hours on Saturday, September 11, are noon to 10 p.m.; Sunday, September 12, the fest continues from noon to 6 p.m. or until the food runs out -- which often happens at this popular event.

The church serves plate dinners --- a choice of souvlakia, kota riganati, pastitsio or a gyro plate -- for $10, as well as a variety of a la carte dinner items and dozens of pastries to eat at the festival or take home. The new items offered this year include the brandy-flamed imported cheese, saganaki, and a nonalcoholic ouzo.
