Bravado should count for something when it comes to breakfast pastries. Too often, dry muffin tops and stale danishes are the standard fare at coffee shops. Even when we're not traveling, we can't seem to escape the dreaded hotel continental breakfast. So the pride that Oak Street Coffee shows in promising that the "World's Best Scones" are in Brookside is something to be admired. The scones? They're something to be devoured.
The "World's Best Scone," is more subtle than you would think. Your first bite will likely seem not that special. But that's because of all those other scones, the bad scones your brain can't forget. The word scone so often accompanies breakfast disappointment that we have steeled ourselves to be ready for a dry, forgettable wedge.
Let the cranberry scone from Oak Street Coffee renew your faith in scones. By the second bite, you'll realize this scone is lighter and moister. The crumbly exterior gives way to a soft and delicate center. The third bite will have you regret driving away in your car before ordering an additional scone -- the tart cranberry rounding off the buttery richness of the pastry.
