Since we will now all be on the Twinkie Diet, this week's battle was about determining which doughnut should get top billing in the pastry case (and your stomach). In the past four hours, I have consumed close to 20 inches of doughnuts -- all in the name of science.
I'm starting to believe we could power a car on glaze. And if that's not the case, I'll just put a bit in my teeth and pull your car for you on your commute home. Before the inevitable sugar crash, let's get into whether the Twist or Long John should be the featured doughnut in your new diet.
I bought the doughnuts at 6 a.m. this morning at Fluffy Fresh Donuts (10123 State Line Road), and like a rookie I also agreed to purchase a strawberry iced and applesauce doughnut. Those two were simply used as controls in this experiment. Either that or they served as decoys, distracting me on the car ride home, so as I could photograph the two other doughnut battlers while they were still intact.
Let us all agree right now, that this is not about which doughnut is best in town. Fluffy Fresh was chosen because I knew they would have both the Twist and the Long John in stock.
The Twist -- The braided pastry is loaded with a light, sugary glaze that melts in your mouth. Every few bites you get a bit of glaze that has hardened slightly, which adds a pleasurable crackle and contrasting texture to the soft, yeasty doughnut underneath. The residual taste is sweet, not fatty, although there is no doubt this thing has been fried.
The Long John -- I eschewed the cream-filled option. We can save that for a battle of eclairs. There is a thick layer of cocoa-y frosting that makes you think this doughnut is going to be dense. And it's certainly not light. But the cake portion of the doughnut has a pleasant chewiness that softens the chocolate frosting as you work your way through it.
The Verdict -- The Long John makes me want a tall glass of cold milk, while the Twist is destined to be partnered with a huge mug of coffee. And since I'm firmly in the camp of coffee for breakfast, the Twist is the superior breakfast option. It has a better balance and I kept wanting to sneak bites, even past the point of fullness. So add the Twist to your list of Twinkie Diet-approved foods.
