Can you feel the excitement for Baja Fresh?

Are you a West Coast transplant missing your favorite burrito? Or maybe you've craved a Baja Taco since the last Baja Fresh closed in Kansas City in 2005.

Good news: The restaurant has returned. Bad news: Maybe not in the way that you were expecting.

Baja Fresh has made its comeback in the new UMKC Student Union (5100 Cherry). When you first walk into the building, you may have a flashback to your freshman year. But is it really worth mingling with hungover college students to get a taste?

That depends on your tolerance for inefficiency.

Once you've decided on something from the billboard-sized menu above the prep area, you must make your way back the way you came to order from the cashier. After that, you have to hope the cashier correctly conveys your order to the food-prep line -- staffed, of course, by fellow hungover college students. Standing and waiting for your number to be called is its own little horror movie -- you are helpless as you watch ... the tomatoes ... you don't want ... go on ... your tacos. Nooooo!

The service is slow, and if you're a vegetarian I wouldn't bother. You'll see line cooks use the same tongs for the steak and the lettuce. But on the plus side, maybe now's the time for you to finally cash in all those leftover meal points you had in college.
