| Fiorella's Jack Stack is still a contender |
As Kansas City's signature dish, barbecue has been, of course, a popular feature of our yearly "Best of Kansas City" issue. And while we've frequently honored the iconic smoke shacks -- Arthur Bryant's, Gates Barbecue, Rosedale Barbecue and others -- the celebratory issue is also a good place to give kudos to newer contenders.
Some of those newer contenders, like Adam's Rib Original KC Barbecue, last year's winner for Best Barbecue: South started out with a lot of promise but didn't make it through the first or second round. Hope Loehr's Adam's Rib was pretty damn good, but the business was underfinanced. But another great discovery from last year's competition, Woodyard Bar-B-Que (which was much more established than Adam's Rib), won Best Barbecue: West and is still a dynamic contender in the local barbecue scene.
Other barbecue pits that hit the skids after winning include the short-lived Beauchamps on the Rail in Lee's Summit. But the list of barbecue restaurants that have taken top honors and are still smokin' hot today include the oldest barbecue joint in the metro, Rosedale Barbecue -- voted Best Barbecue a decade ago -- and beloved places like Oklahoma Joe's, Danny Edwards Famous Kansas City Barbecue, the upscale Jack Stack Barbecue and the lovable joint in Kansas City, Kansas, that serves terrific dishes and the best deep-fried hot dog in town: Quick's Bar-B-Que.
We've given love to individual dishes, like french fries (R.J.'s Bob-B-Que Shack, Oklahoma Joe's) and pulled pork (Oklahoma Joe's -- again!) and ribs, naturally, like those served at the popular L.C.'s Barbecue.
If you really love great Kansas City-style barbecue, there's a best choice out there in every corner of the metro.
