Kings of Pastry, a new documentary by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker (creators of The War Room and Don't Look Back), opens a weeklong tomorrow, October 8, at Screenland Crown Center.

The film depicts one of France's most famous pastry contests, part of the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, which is held every four years and pits trained craftspeople in a number of fields (including clothing design and ceramics and glassworks).

The film has garnered mostly positive reviews, including nods from The Village Voice and The New York Times, and Variety calls the story of the pastry competition "gripping, even for non-foodies."

Local film critic Cynthia Haines -- who reviews movies with Steve Walker on KCUR 89.3's Up to Date With Steve Kraske -- liked Kings of Pastry a great deal. "The film isn't a competition between pastry chefs in the traditional sense," she says.

"I think audiences will really enjoy this film," she adds. "There's a lot of drama, and the filmmakers are both very famous documentary moviemakers."
