No, not the Thai Place...it's the Thai Homeplace

A popular brand name is worth a lot of spring rolls and Tiger Cry beef. When restaurateur Ann Liberda was forced -- reportedly by the Kansas Revenue Department -- to sell at least one of her popular Thai Place restaurants this year, the new owners of the venue at 11838 Quivira didn't get to keep the name of the restaurant.

But those owners, husband-and-wife Werachone and Supamas Singhai, didn't want to lose the customer base that Liberda had built in her years operating this fourth Thai Place restaurant. So instead of a dramatic name change (like, say, Thai Me Up, Thai Me Down), they simply added a word: Home.

The Singhais' restaurant, now called the Thai Homeplace Restaurant, opened officially last Thursday. Two nights later, there were still bunches of festive balloons scattered around the dining room, which is much more elegant than its predecessor.

One of the servers told me that the venue had been nearly empty when the Singhais purchased the business. The contents of the restaurant were sold off -- former Thai Place partner Lee Chai, the current owner of Hot Basil, bought many of the chairs -- and the dining room was nearly an empty shell. The Singhais painted the room a tasteful chocolate brown, added booths and new tables and chairs, and hung embroidered tapestries on the wall.

"The kitchen staff and the serving staff are the same," a waitress told me. "We all worked for Ann."

Once Kansas City's best-known Thai restaurateur, Ann Liberda created

a small empire of popular Thai Place restaurants. After starting as a waitress at the original Bangkok Pavilion

on Metcalf in the 1980s, Liberda went off to open her first restaurant at 9359 Santa Fe Lane, in Overland Park. That original Thai Place, I'm happy to say, is still open (despite some reports to the contrary) and Liberda is still cooking her signature dishes there, like King and Ann chicken.

The menu at the Thai Homeplace is pretty much Liberda's collection of dishes, though King and Annchicken is now called -- shades of Rodgers and Hammerstein! -- the King and I Chicken

Liberda's son Ted now owns and operates the Westport location, which is still called the Thai Place.

We have eaten there for years. The Thai Home Place people and food are the same as The Thai Place and this means great food and great service. My wife and friends love it there and eat at the The Thai Home Place every week, when possible.

Highly recommended!

paul, you realize that what you said doesn't make any sense?

what's wrong with the people?

Since the people are the same we will not eat there.

The people may be good but the people are not.

I'm looking forward to checking it out. We loved going to the Thai Place. Hoping the menu is the same.

We welcome back customers to the "New Thai Homeplace" to enjoy Thai food as it would be served at home in a Northerner Environment (Lana art work at restaurant).

All the facts about the previous "Thai Place" can be found at.. http://www.ksrevenue.org/news/...

Charles, you can't just casually drop something like that into a story and not provide any details. She was forced to sell her restaurant by the Kansas Revenue Department? Why? To pay off back taxes? To keep her from having a monopoly on Thai food in Johnson County?

It does not matter what the name is, still a great place for Thai!
