Call it budget-conscious or poor taste but American beer drinkers slug down an astonishing amount of crappy beer.
The Chicago Tribune put together a chart of the top selling beer brands in the U.S. Bud Light came in first with $5.25 billion in sales between October 3 of this year and last. But fifth on the list is the choice of beer pong players and university tailgaters -- Natural Light with an astonishing $1.13 billion in sales.
A billion dollars worth of Natty Light is enough to throw a fraternity party until 3010. It's especially impressive when you consider that I've never paid more than $15 for a 30-pack. It's a mind-boggling amount that makes beer can pyramids and Halloween costumes made of beer boxes seem like mere drops in an ocean of watery beer.
Can that much Natural Light ruin the palate of beer drinkers like cigarettes for a chef or a summer spent working at an ice cream shop? Or should we just count it in the same category as bottled water sales, which currently sit at 500 million bottles a week, albeit a slightly alcoholic water? Then we could follow the lead of Concord, Massachusetts, which has banned the sale of bottled water in 2011 and stop this snowball of frat beer. So if you care about the environment, you won't buy Natural Light.
