There are only seventeen days until Thanksgiving. Since this week is really the ideal time to start make holiday restaurant reservations, Fat City is going to treat you, over the next few days, to a veritable smorgasbord of possibilities, from fancy dinners to lowbrow buffets and take-out feasts that you can serve at home (on your own china) prepared by restaurants and supermarkets. And everything in-between.

We'll present you with expensive options, cheap ones and places that let the kids eat free. If you have your own suggestions, feel free to leave a comment or two.

The two locations of Avenues Bistro -- Brookside and the newer venue in Leawood -- will offer a $135 take-out dinner that serves eight to ten hungry people. The selections include a choice of whole roasted turkey, sugar-cured ham or roasted prime rib. A choice of two potato options (mashed spuds with gravy, candied yams, potato casserole or brioche stuffing); choice of one salad (either spinach salad or roasted butternut squash salad); choice of one side dish (green bean casserole, balsamic glazed carrots, roasted butternut squash or corn souffle casserole) and a choice of two desserts from this list: pumpkin pie, pumpkin cream cheese roll, pecan pie, German apple spiced cake, chocolate gateau, or vinsanto cake. All of the dinners include cranberry sauce and dinner rolls with butter. Orders must be made no later than Tuesday, November 23 at 2 p.m.

For diners who prefer sitting in a restaurant and being served on Turkey Day, the InterContinental Hotel Kansas City on the Country Club Plaza will serve a buffet in the Rooftop Ballroom from 2 to 9 p.m. and a multi-course pre-fixe dinner in the Oak Room from 4-9 p.m.

The pre-fixe dinner, with options, features an amuse-bouche of braised pork belly on crispy polenta, cream of chestnut soup or Oak Room salad, truffle-and-wine-cured salmon, mint sorbet intermezzo, a choice of entrees and selection of desserts.

The buffet will feature chilled seafood, an assortment of charcuterie, salads and soups, a variety of entree specialties -- including the traditional roasted turkey -- seasonal accompaniments and a dessert buffet.

Each meal is $65 for adults; $30 for children ages 6-12 years old -- excluding tax and gratuity.

The family-owned Shields Manor Bistro in Platte City will host a Thanksgiving dinner from  noon to 7 p.m. The $32 meal includes turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry-pecan relish, green beans, buttered corn, house-baked bread and dessert. To make reservations, call 816-858-5557.

Two Thanksgivings ago we bought a smoked turkey from Danny Edwards Blvd BBQ and it was total heaven. I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't feel like cooking their own turkey!
