KC Cake Pops: Forget cupcakes, give your loved ones cake on a stick

Since the season to be jolly is fast-approaching, Fat City is looking around for holiday gift ideas, preferably the kind that can be eaten (or used to make something that can be devoured). After all, diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but everyone else wants a box of good candy or a festive cheese ball.

When co-workers Becca Helzer and Renea Mulkey -- who had been fellow employees for nine years at Sioux Chief Manufacturing Company in Peculiar -- were thinking up ideas to earn a little extra dough, they thought of making cupcakes. Then, after doing an internet search about the local cupcake market, they had an epiphany.

"A lot of people in Kansas City were already doing the cupcake thing," said Helzer. "Too many, in fact."

So the young women did another internet search and found, on the bakerella.com website, a different concept: cake pops.

"Since no one in Kansas City seemed to be selling them," said Helzer, "we thought it would be a good business for us."

Since June, Helzer and Mulkey have been in business, even though they haven't quit their day jobs. As the only two employees of KC Cake Pops, the two women are responsible for making and delivering their wares: chocolate-dipped "pops" made of a mixture of freshly-baked cake and frosting (the current selections are chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, butter pecan, yellow and strawberry) molded into balls, speared on a wooden stick and dipped into chocolate.

Sure, it's a novelty, but it's catching on. Helzer says that the festive-colored pops (white chocolate can be colored any possible shade) have become sought-after bridal shower favorites -- dipped in colored chocolate to match the bride's wedding colors -- and children's birthday party favors.

"I just got an e-mail today from a woman who asked if I could create cake pops to look like zoo animals, including elephants and zebras. I don't know if I can, but I'm sure going to try."

Helzer and Mulkey are currently delivering their cake pops during the evenings and weekends. It's a juggling act (particular for Mulkey, who works full-time at Price Chopper now and is married with four children), but they see a lot of potential ahead. Belzer is already planning to create ornament-like cake pops for the winter holidays and has plans to introduce new products soon, including pie-on-a-stick, brownies-on-a-stick and s'mores-on-a-stick.

The company currently charges $18 (plus tax) for a dozen cake pops. For more information, call 816-721-5014 or click here.

Bakerella is the queen of cake pops. They are magnificent little edible sculptures on a stick (with directions for how to make them - if you are crazy enough to).

I love cake balls and they are our family's favorite dessert. I make them for all the holidays and decorate and color accordingly. Here's where I found the recipe for making them yourself:

I love KC Cake Pops! The chocolate is my favorite, but I had an Upside-Down Pineapple one last week and it was crazy good! The best thing about them is you can eat one and have a nice treat without going nuts on calories, or you can buy a dozen and they freeze really well, so you always have one on hand when you need something sweet.
