In our ongoing search for a go-to sushi place, my wife and I found ourselves sitting at the bar at Jun's this weekend, staring at the above plate of grub. It was solid -- but more than quality it had me thinking about quantity.
Specifically: How many pieces of sushi am I supposed to be able to eat? I like the stuff, but I always find that my dining partners are able to stuff themselves with considerably more rolls than I am -- 10 and 15 and even 20 -- while I get full at around eight. Am I a pansy? Take the poll below and help it judge me with its shame graphs.

Dude, you need to go to California and eat at Guy Fieri's restaurant Tex Wasabi in either Santa Rosa or Sacramento. They give new meaning to the term "pigging out on sushi" since it's a BBQ joint combined with a sushi palace. I have never seen rolls the size of theirs! The Red Dragon Roll alone is enough to feed four people!
The problem with sushi, especially if the rolls are thick rendering the bites quite large, is that you can down 3 pounds of the stuff extremely quickly... before your brain realizes how full you are.
Another consideration: alcohol affects my capacity greatly. If i'm just drinking a soft drink or water, I fill up faster. Give me sake, though, and I'm a bottomless pit.
Still, people exaggerate. Average for me = 10.
Our typical sushi dinner between my husband and I is as follows: 8 - 9 pieces each of nigiri sushi, a.k.a. sliced fish on rice; 2 rolls (a.k.a. maki) which we split evenly. Generally the rolls come in quantities of 8 pieces, so that's another 8 pieces each. So a total of 16 - 17 pieces of sushi per person.
And at Friends on a Monday $1 sushi night, that comes out to about $33, without all the extras thrown in for good measure. (We also get an order of edamame, I get a salad or a miso soup, and sometimes we both order a large Sapporo, sometimes it's just my husband drinking the beer. Depends.) With the extras, we generally run a tab of about $50.
Aaannnd now I craving sushi. Dammit.
I have pondered this same question in the past. I recently dined with a friend that ate 8 full rolls of sushi. Not just pieces but rolls! I had one and a few negri and was at full capacity.
