| The taste of summer...in December |
File this news under "Better Late than Never."
During the spring and summer months, David and Sally Calvin get up before dawn ever Saturday morning and drive from their farm near Jefferson City to the courtyard of the Prairie Village Shopping Center.
Tomorrow -- Saturday, December 4th -- the Calvins return to Prairie Village -- but inside a heated storefront location.
For the last several years, the shady and covered courtyard in the Prairie Village Shopping Center has been the setting for their Saturday-only display of fresh produce, baked goods and jams, jellies, salsas and dips.
The Calvins call their summer market Widgeonwood Market, after their farm in Jefferson City. Saturday's event, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the former Natural Wear store in the Prairie Village Shopping Center at 71st and Mission Road (it's next to the Curious Sofa shop) is a holiday market.
Sally Calvin says they'll be hauling all of their best-selling food items -- including her made-from-scratch dill mustard and English Pub horseradish -- and introducing new ones, like tequila lime mango salsa and sweet tomatilla onion salsa. Another new item Sally Calvin calls cranberry splurge: "It's a cross between a salsa and a sauce," she says, "made with sweet onions and cranberries. It's delicious as a cocktail appetizer poured over cream cheese."
The Calvins will also be selling organic peanut brittle, chocolate truffles, and English toffee.
