| It's a Topeka comeback for the Krauses |
In a few months -- Robert Krause says late winter, Molly Krause predicts early spring -- the Krauses will open another location of their popular Lawrence upscale hamburger joint, The Burger Stand, in Topeka. The restaurant will be in a relatively new -- and, thus far, unsuccessful -- development project near Washburn University called College Hill.
There's a sentimental reason for opening another Burger Stand in Topeka, says Molly Krause: "I'm a Topeka native, I grew up there and, later, met Robert there. He had a goumet catering business and a coffee house and I later worked there. It was called New City Cafe and even though we sold it in 1999, it still operates in Topeka, although its changed hands a couple of times."
The College Hill Redevelopment is in, says Molly Krause, "a distinctly mixed area." Since it's been difficult to lure tenants to the property, the Krauses have encouraged other Topeka businesses to move to the center with them, including a bakery, a coffee house, a wine bar and a designer eyeglass shop. The Krauses will only operate the Burger Stand and a private dining room/catering business.
"We have a lot of relationships in Topeka," says Molly Krause, "so we're very optimistic."
Why not a Burger Stand in Kansas City?
"Well," Krause said after a long pause, "I don't know. We're just taking one step at a time."
