Otto's will once again be a stand-alone restaurant.
JohnEric asked in the comments of our year-end restauarant-closing round-up about the hamburger stand, and sadly Otto's has to be added to that list.
Otto's Original Burger and Malt @Czar Bar closed on December 3, but the burger and shake spot will tentatively reopen as Otto & Ruthie's in midtown next April or May.
The restaurant will be named for restaurateur Otto Miller and his wife and business partner, Ruthie Cosgrove, who returned to Kansas City last summer to open a
hamburger stand inside Czar Bar in the Crossroads. But fans of Otto's will always think of it as a midtown spot -- the original Otto's Malt Shop was on 39th Street in the 1990s.
For those who didn't make it to Otto's Original Burger and Malt, the menu was a mix of specialty and stuffed burgers named for celebrities and cities. The Christopher Walkin [sic] was a burger stuffed with provolone, green onion and roasted red pepper, and then topped with Italian sausage, spinach and marinara. The other focus of the menu were shakes and malts, either spiked or virgin. The Forty Deuce (vanilla vodka, Kahlua and vanilla ice cream) was one of the most popular frozen cocktails, while the chocolate malt has some fans thinking it's the best in the city.
Otto and Ruthie's will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week.
