Oatmeal is having a restaurant revival
Earlier this month, the restaurant trade publication Nation's Restaurant News reported that McDonald's would roll out a new menu item, fruit and maple oatmeal -- served with or without brown sugar and priced at $1.99 -- to 14,000 of its locations on January 3. (The Houston Press thinks the fast food giant made the decision after Starbucks had terrific success introducing an oatmeal product two years ago).

Oatmeal has a long history, particularly in Scotland, as a popular breakfast dish, but enuoyed renewed interest in the United States after it was proven that oatmeal can lower blood cholesterol and may reduce the risk of heart disease.

There are restaurants in the metro besides McDonald's and Starbucks that serve the hot, healthy breakfast dish. It just won't be nearly as cheap.

The Classic Cookie in Waldo sells a bowl of hot oatmeal for $3.25.

The Cook Shack Cafe serves a bowl of hot oatmeal with an order of buttered toast for $4.15.

You Say Tomato offers a bowl of cooked oatmeal with your choice of milk, brown sugar and raisins for $4.75.

The Oak Room in the InterContinental Hotel Kansas City serves a bowl of oatmeal with milk or cream for $5.50.

The most expensive oatmeal in the city is served on the breakfast menu at Chaz on the Plaza in the Raphael Hotel. A bowl costs $9 and is served with sliced bananas, chopped walnuts, natural yogurt, a dusting of nutmeg and warm milk. .
