Restaurateur Rod Anderson -- yes, the one accused of torching the original Hereford House Steakhouse in 2008 -- has closed his other downtown steak restaurant. He had opened it across the street from the site of the first Hereford House, in late 2009.
The closing marked the first time in over a half-century that a steakhouse bearing the Hereford House name hasn't been a fixture of downtown Kansas City.
The Prime Rib Grill by Hereford House, which specialized in prime rib, steaks and other familiar Hereford House dishes, closed two weeks ago. The answering machine at the Prime Rib Grill has a recorded message announcing that the restaurant is "permanently closed."
Although the Hereford House, which Anderson purchased in 1987, was never considered one of Kansas City's more upscale steak venues, it was a popular tourist destination and had built a loyal following among local diners, having successfully survived the changing fortunes of downtown Kansas City, particularly in the 1970s when the area was no longer a dominant dining and entertainment destination. For many years, the Hereford House was, along with the Italian Gardens Restaurant and the Savoy Grill, among the few restaurants still operating in the heart of downtown Kansas City.

No, Rod Anderson had been leasing that space as a banquet facility for some time. I believe it was for a couple of years before the Prime Rib Grill opened.
Rod Anderson apparently chose not to renew the lease. Or the business wasn't all that. You choose.
