The Capricorn diet? Dark foods and pretty table settings

Astrologically, we're in the time of Capricorn. So what do diners born under this astrological sign (December 22-January 20) like to eat? We asked our resident Fat City expert, waitress and astrologer Brenda G. Smith, to answer this question.

"Well, Capricorns are very concerned about what other people think of them, so they're frequently dieting," Smith says. "But they do enjoy eating, too. And they like eating in style. They love status and formality."

If you're going to invite a Capricorn over to your home for dinner, it's good to break out the best china and silver, Smith says. And it's not the astrological sign to drag out to a place like Town Topic or the Old Country Buffet. "Capricorns like to eat in really upscale restaurants, if they have their choice. But they're not food snobs. They'll eat macaroni and cheese but prefer it to be served on Royal Doulton china."

Capricorn, which is represented by a goat with a fish's tail, evokes seafood, Smith says. Capricorns have an affinity for the bounty of the ocean, particularly lobster and shrimp. "And since Capricorn rules the skeletal structure of the body," she adds, "they like to eat foods that are good for the bones -- calcium-rich dishes."

The color associated with the sign of Capricorn is black, so Smith suggests wooing a Capricorn with sexy foods that are dark in color: blackberries, figs, black currants, licorice.

Licorice? "It's black," she snaps. "And foods that are slightly burnt are popular, too. Capricorns love anything caramelized."

What about, say, caramels? They're good with licorice and blackberries.

"Capricorns love sweets," Smith says. "You can't go wrong with dark chocolate, either."
