When it came time to justify my move from Brooklyn to Kansas City, Mr. Goodcents made the list. It was, admittedly, a long list.
But still, its tuna sandwich was vastly superior (less mayo, fresher rolls) to the competing choices at Subway and Quiznos -- the standard options on the East Coast. And that's when I realized that not all subs are created equal.
Hoagies can inspire apathy. Heroes can be a last resort for meals. And submarine sandwiches can simply be a matter of the lunch option that is physically closest to one's office. But hidden among the combo meals and asiago-laden rolls are a few tasty sammidges.
Meatball subs are found on every sandwich board in town. But the meatball sub at Pandolfi's Deli? That's special. A lean ground-beef meatball that sits under a bed of mozzarella, romano and tomato sauce on a hard roll from Le Monde Bakery.
And it was until I had the pork tenderloin sandwich at Kitty's Cafe that I suddenly discovered one of the real reasons to live in Kansas City. Made the same way since 1951, it has three pancake-thin, fried tenderloins and is my favorite senior citizen in town.
