From the pink-painted storefront to the hearts-filled window display, Lawrence's Pink Box Bakeshop (727 Massachusetts) is frosted in cloying sweetness. But the treats inside temper the visual blood-sugar spike.
If I could find an all-carbohydrate diet that wouldn't shorten my life span, I'd sign up in a healthy heartbeat and let cinnamon rolls have their own food group. So when I saw a pan brimming with a freshly baked batch, I had to have one.
One bite of the cinnamon roll revealed a soft and lightly flaky
texture, with most of its sweetness oozing from the rich, buttery icing
drizzled on top rather than from the dough itself.
To balance my indulgence, I ordered a baked good that was slightly less sweet -- a raspberry-cream-cheese muffin sprinkled with powdered
sugar. Its flavor and density were comparable to a good
cornbread, and the tangy-sweet raspberry jam on top was more complex than the roll's icing.
I
was satisfied with the taste and price of the items, which came to a
total of $4.62. For the pastry partisan who is wary of a sugar-induced
coma, the sweetness is understated enough to please but not overwhelm. Those of you prepared for a hospital visit can just ask for extra
icing.
