There's been a new delicatessen in Westport for five months now, but not a traditional delicatessen in any sense.
Yes, the staff makes sandwiches (including a grilled Reuben with really chewy corned beef) and offers kosher salami, liverwurst, chicken salad and beef tongue -- all classic deli favorites.
But Ike's Deli, which is located at 536 Westport Road in the former KC
Pita space, leaves few ethnic culinary cultures untouched.
The menu runs the gamut: vegan hot dogs, Greek salads, hummus, Tex-Mex quesadillas, pasta with meatballs, and Southern-fried chicken.
"We have great fried chicken," says one of the employees, running out the door with a delivery order. "It never sits under a hot lamp so it's always moist."
I asked him if they make the fried bird from scratch.
"You mean do all the breading and stuff here?"
He barely stifles a laugh: "Nah."
