The downside of the Valentine's Day holiday falling on a Monday evening is that after a night of dining and drinking champagne -- and whatever else follows that behavior -- you'll have to stumble into work the following day, maybe a little worse for wear.
Another potential negative is that Valentine's is, traditionally, the night that everyone goes out to eat, including folks who may not go to a restaurant the other 364 nights of the year. It can be a very busy night.
But there are interesting alternatives to actually dining on Valentine's night this year. Here are a few to consider.
For a cozy little Saturday lunch a' deux, the two Andre's Confiserie Suisse locations -- the Plaza and Leawood -- serve a sweet prix-fixe luncheon (dessert is included) on a first-come, first-served basis.

Beth Barden, the chef-owner of the Dutch Hill bruncheonette Succotash is calling her Sunday brunch on February 13 "The Brunch of Love." She'll be serving from the regular brunch menu and offering an array of special dishes, too, including what she calls "my gorgeous Belgian waffles." You can also taste the newest house juice concoction, which Barden is calling -- in honor of Valentine's Day -- an "Elixir of Love." "It's a mix of fresh carrot, ginger, apple, orange and celery," she says.
If your idea of a romantic breakfast involves a buffet and Donna Summer singing "Bad Girls," the disco soundtrack of the 77 South Restaurant & Lounge Experience in Leawood will set just the right pre-Valentine's Day tone. Sunday brunch -- we discuss it here -- is offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is priced at $16 per person.
Wil Jenny's Tables & Tap at 135th and Metcalf is serving a Valentine's Brunch on Sunday, February 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring assorted fruits and breads, shrimp cocktail and smoked salmon, smoked brisket, turkey and prime rib, huevos rancheros, biscuits and gravy, chicken enchiladas and a chocolate dessert buffet. The buffet is priced at $16 for adults, and the restaurant is accepting reservations for parties of any size, even couples.
