Yes, there are people who wait until the very, very last second to decide whether to go out to eat on Valentine's Day. These procrastinators are often the sad people who wind up celebrating the romantic holiday eating hot dogs in the parking lot at QuikTrip. I know, I'm one of them!
But there are restaurants that still have a few Monday-night reservations open. Or, in the case of Beth Barden's Succotash, she waited until the very, very last minute to decide to be open!
Barden will be serving a prix fixe Valentine's dinner at Succotash for lovebirds -- at $100 per couple -- and for singles, who get to eat for $35 each if they sit at the bar. Beverage service is complimentary, and the meal includes brie en croute with wild blueberry compote, a choice of two special soups, choice of salad, and a choice of the following entrees: Angus ribeye with horseradish mashed potatoes and bacon balsamic Brussels sprouts, brick chicken with roasted tomato polenta and wilted spinach with pan jus, pan-seared scallops with champagne sweet pea risotto and citrus beurre blanc. For vegetarians: pan-seared portobello "scallops" with champagne sweet pea risotto and citrus beurre blanc. Dessert choices include chocolate pot de creme, seven-layer red-velvet cheesecake or cotton candy cappuccino. For reservations, call 816-421-2807 or 816-810-0394.
Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy in Zona Rosa still has several reservation times open on Valentine's night for couples who want to take advantage of a special promotion: the "Valentine's Fajita Trio for Two," which includes wood-grilled, seasoned steak and chicken, plus two skewers of Yucatan barbecue-basted shrimp -- all served with grilled onions, charro beans, sour cream, shredded cheese, pico de gallo and flour tortillas. A dessert, Mexican flan, is included in the $29.99 price tag. Call 816-584-8557 for reservations.
Cafe Trio still has a handful of reservations open on Monday night for tables at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and after 8:30 p.m. That night's prix fixe dinner is priced at $59.95 per person, and pianist Alice Jenkins will be on hand to play romantic tunes until the restaurant closes. Call 816-756-3227 for more information.
For a Valentine's evening dinner that's a little more, well, swinging, the Shady Lady Lounge at 2800 East 12th Street will be open and serving food -- until 3 a.m.! -- in addition to offering the finest in adult entertainment. No reservations are required. Call 816-231-9696 for more information.
