Val-O-Ween, a fundraiser for local AIDS service organizations, is officially an annual tradition. This year's event, the Amazeball, will be held tonight at the Madrid Theater (3810 Main). It's part masquerade ball, part Vaudeville show, and definitely entertaining.
DJ Ryan Kenney and sketch-comedy duo Jessica and Hunter are the scheduled entertainment for the fundraiser organized by the Millenial League of the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City. The night starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Get access to the pre-party and open bar, which kicks off at 7 p.m., for $75.
Get out your flapper costume and head over to Californos (4124 Pennsylvania) tonight. The Westport restaurant is holding its annual Valentine's Day Massacre Masquerade Party, and the Roaring 20s are in full swing. The night starts at 8 p.m., and admission is $10.
It's the Second Friday Happy Hour at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Explore the interactive world of the RMB City Opera (the exhibit opened last weekend) and then voyage through cyberspace on a scavenger hunt using your smartphone or an iPod touch borrowed from the museum. It's a cash bar.
The Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show comes to the American Royal Center this weekend. If you have any inkling about starting a garden, here's where you'll learn exactly what you need to do. Powell Gardens will have a 5,000-square-foot "Garden of Eatin," with demonstration gardens and educational guides on how to grow your own fruits and vegetables. Tickets are $8.50 for adults ($1 off with your Price Chopper card). The show runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m on Sunday.
And if you can't decide between chocolate or coffee for Valentine's Day, don't settle. The Roasterie has a promotional offer at both its cafes this week. Order an espresso-based drink and get a free Andre's heart-shaped chocolate.
