Despite a yearlong rumor that Sprinkles (its website continues to list Kansas City as a "coming soon" possibility) might be headed to the Plaza, it won't be the first cupcake shop in Kansas City's signature shopping district.
The Kansas City Business Journal reports that Cupcake A La Mode will move, likely in early April, from its current location at 1209 W. 47th St. to 4639 Wornall (across from Houston's). Cupcake A La Mode will operate two Plaza-area stores briefly -- the current shop expected to stay open until June 1.
Owners Lisa and Daniel Clark opened a second location (11529 Ash) last February in the Park Place shopping center in Leawood. The bakery divides its cupcake menu into two parts: chocolate
and vanilla cake. The cupcakes are $3 each or $33 for a dozen; those
with smaller appetites or children can opt for the child-sized cupcakes
at $2.25 apiece. One of the recent additions to the menu is a cupcake sandwich -- buttercream icing placed between two cupcake tops and rolled in sprinkles. It's also one of the few area cupcake shops to offer gluten-free and vegan cupcakes.
Cupcake A La Mode went icing-to-icing with BabyCakes last January for a battle of the dishes, and the Plaza store's Chocolate Obsession was likely the best of the lot. The cupcake shop also rolls out a series of specialty flavors for each holiday or season. Robert Bishop sampled the pumpkin cheesecake and trick-or-treat cupcake for Fat City last Halloween and had high praise for the candy-topped mini cake.
In addition to losing out on the Plaza, Sprinkles might start to worry about Cupcake A La Mode as a national competitor. The KC Business Journal piece noted that the Daniels duo is considering expanding beyond Kansas City.
The West Plaza location is typically open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, but will be open today for Valentine's Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Park Place store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
