The food in the parking lot can be just as important, if not more so, than what's going on in the stadium. And a press announcement from the Kansas City Royals suggests that the culinary outlook for your little patch of pavement is a lot more rosy this season.
The Royals have named Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue the official tailgate caterer for Kauffman Stadium. They'll have a series of buffet menus (smoked meats, grilled dishes and sides) available in the parking lot.
While Jack Stack will be available outside the stadium, ARAMARK will still be the group 'cueing at the concessions. Behind the outfield section, there's the Royals All-Star Barbecue. It was controversial when it replaced Gates back in 2009, but as my predecessor Owen Morris noted, the "flavors are quite similar to Fiorella's," with staff that worked previously for the new catering partner. If you're actually talented on the grill, ARAMARK is looking for concession workers, including grill cooks.
Fiorella's earned the number 14 spot on our top 50 favorite dishes for its onion-ring tower. Here's hoping that the hand-breaded onion rings the size of truck tires make the cut for the sides offered.
The guy who might be happiest about the new partnership at Kauffman Stadium plays just across the street. Keep an eye out for the Kansas City Chiefs running back Thomas Jones, at the tailgate next to yours, holding a plate piled high with fire-skewed wings, baked beans and salad.
