Food writers today often bemoan that society has forgotten that food can bring us together. Well, Rudolph Bledsoe and Chris Knitter are hoping to change that with a series of sausage-themed parties and plans for a custom grill, the likes of which has never been in Kansas City.
1. Can you tell Fat City a bit about the beginnings, i.e., the party and how you got the idea?
SausageFest started with a bunch of people from work, just hanging out. Food and beer bring people together, and I wanted to show off my dope technique for grilling sausage. We were creating an invite on Facebook and called it 'SausageFest', and it stuck! - Rudolph
SausageFest started in May of 2010. We started having these parties where we grilled sausage because we were hungry, and we like to party. It sounded like a great way to get our co-workers and friends together for a fun night by the grill on a summer night. - Chris
2. Will your sausage slinging take the form of a cart or catered parties?
We have some ideas we're working on having fabricated for a 'Street Sausage Mobile Grilling Unit,' or 'SSMGU.' It's science. Once we find a commissary, we can get our health inspection and take SausageFest to the streets of KC. We have a lot of ideas for the SSMGU that we think will add to the unique street-food-buying experience -- iPod dock and speakers, large dual charcoal/propane grill, LED lighting, and credit-card payments are just a few of the unique features. Something else that is convenient is the menu: one meat or veggie (YES, veggie!) sausage on a bun with a drink for $5!
We haven't really discussed catering. We're more focused on festivals, concerts, carnivals, and street corners, though if the money is right, I'll take my shirt off! Having a job these days is a hot commodity. - Chris
While we'll be catering to the vegetarian crowd to a certain extent, it's all about the meat. The meat's where it's at! We're bringing meat to the forefront. Sausage is the new cupcakes. - Rudolph
5. What do you hope happens with SausageFest, LLC?
We really hope we can take the cart out on any given night to Westport or wherever, and have fun while generating a little extra dough on the side. Who knows, maybe we'll end up with a fleet of 'Street Sausage Mobile Grilling Units' slinging sausage all over Kansas City! - Chris
6. When's the next event?
We have a party with our friends and supporters every month till Halloween. To find out when and where we'll be slinging sausage next, check out SausageFestKC.com and follow us on Twitter @SausageFestKC.
