Get ready to bierock, Mission. Runza -- a bierock and hamburger chain founded in Lincoln, Nebraska -- will open its second location in Kansas.
The Star's Joyce Smith reports that the fast-food chain, which currently has a franchise in Lawrence (2700 Iowa), is in the process of renovating the former Captain D's Seafood Kitchen space (6751 Johnson Drive). The new location is expected to open by mid-May.
Bierocks are yeasty bread pockets stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables. Runza (another name for bierock) calls them sandwiches and fills them with mushrooms, cheese, ground beef or bacon, lettuce and tomato. The original has ground beef and cabbage. This is Nebraska's version of a loose-meat sandwich, the Maid-Rite or Nu-Way of Lincoln.
The burgers are also well-known, available as a 1/4-pound single or 1/2-pound double. The standard dress -- the Runza way -- is ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion, lettuce and tomato. At locations in Lincoln, you can buy their burger patties frozen to cook at home.
Runza also serves Polish hot dogs, mini corn dogs, and fried- or grilled-chicken sandwiches. As for sides, the fries are crinkle-cut, and the onion rings are double-breaded. In addition to baking the rolls on-site, Runza has homemade chocolate-chip cookies on its menu.
The first restaurant opened in Lincoln in 1949, and Runza now has more than 80 locations in Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Kansas. Who has been there? And what do we have to order?
