If you can't eat meat today, go fishing ...

The first Friday in Lent officially kicks off the church fish-fry season in the Kansas City metro, and, no matter what your religious affiliation, these modestly priced meals -- fish, shrimp or some other meatless alternative (usually, but not always, available for diners who don't care for seafood) -- can be a cost-effective way to take a family out to eat.

For the last several years, Fat City has listed the area churches offering these meatless meals. If you have additional questions (directions, prices), we suggest contacting them directly.

Shrimp Boil: All Fridays during Lent (through April 15) at St. John Francis Regis Parish, 8941 James A. Reed Road. The $8 meal includes a choice of fried or boiled shrimp, baked salmon or crusted tilapia filet with salad, baked potato and roll, The $10 combo dinner features the fish dinner plus six pieces of shrimp and a side dish. For $5, the choices are clam chowder with side dishes or a pizza dinner. Desserts are sold separately for 50 cents. Hosted by Boy Scout Troop #98.

Fish Fry: Starting tonight and each Friday through April 15, St. Gabriel Archangel Parish at 4737 N. Cleveland will host a fish dinner -- carryout is available, too -- from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Prices are $9 for adults and $6 for children.

Fish Fry: The Holy Spirit Parish at 11300 W. 103rd St. in Overland Park hosts a seafood dinner tonight (and each Friday through April 15) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m.

Fish Fry: St. Charles Borromeo Parish at 900 N.E. Shady Lane Dr. will host a fish dinner tonight (and through April 15)  from 4 to 8 p.m.
