Once all the hoopla surrounding St. Patrick's Day settles down, it's time to celebrate other ethnic communities in the metro. Saturday's Holi festivities, celebrating the Indian Festival of Colors, will feature food, music and color. Literally. People toss colored powder on each other, says Chandra Venkat, the spokesman for the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Kansas City, which hosts the festival on March 19 at 6330 Lackman Road in Shawnee.

I'm excited by the food aspect of the festival. More than 25 food vendors will be selling dishes, both savory and sweet, from many different regions of India, from noon to 2:30 p.m. The tossing of colored powder sounds distinctly less appealing, although Venkat says patrons are usually politely asked if they want colored powder tossed on them before it actally happens.

"The festival is a good opportunity to discover how many different kinds of cuisines are prepared in one country," Venkat says. "In India, you can find completely different styles of cooking by traveling 100 miles in any direction."

Food will be sold from different stalls inside the main hall of the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center throughout the afternoon; patrons buy food tickets in order to sample an array of delicacies. There is no actual admission to the festival, which is open to the public, Venkat says.

"It's the most fun-filled and boisterous of any Hindu festival," Venkat says. "It's all about music, dance and bright colors."
