What if you could only have one breakfast item for the rest of your life?

Bacon or eggs? What's it going to be?
  • Bacon or eggs? What's it going to be?

Breakfast is all about choices. Sweet? Savory? Cold pizza? But what if you were limited in what you could eat? What if you could only have one breakfast item for the rest of your life?

Breakfast sandwiches are acceptable, as are composed dishes such as eggs Benedict, even though they contain more than one ingredient. Combination plates and stalwart partners, such as bacon and eggs, are out (unless you decide to sandwich them between an English muffin or waffle). And, oh yeah, drinks are a breakfast item as well.

With only one plate, cup or bowl available, I would choose a cup of coffee. In the winter and fall, I'll have hot coffee. And right around now, I'll transition to iced or toddy coffee in a glass. I could live without oatmeal or a banana in the morning, but I'd miss the sensory stimulation and badly needed shot of caffeine from coffee, as well as the actual act of preparation that signals it's time to sit down at my desk and begin thinking about food in Kansas City.

So what's the one breakfast item you couldn't live without?
