Earlier this month, Fat City reported that Zocalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria, a new cantina, was on its way to filling the long-vacant Mi Cocina space on the Plaza. It was to be a partnership between Victor Esquada and Ivan Marquez, of the successful Johnson County restaurant Frida's Contemporary Mexican Cuisine, and Chris Ridler, owner of the Sol Cantina restaurant and watering hole on 31st Street.
The question today: Is there still a partnership? Not according to two sources close to the Esquada and Ridler camps.
"There was a breakdown in communication between them," says one source with inside knowledge of the partnership, who requests anonymity. "I think the whole deal is in the hands of lawyers now."
Ridler was unavailable for comment. Esquada has not returned phone calls. Highwoods Properties spokeswoman Gayle Terry said she could not comment on the story. A source close to Highwoods, which owns the Country Club Plaza, tells me that the deal Highwoods signed with the Zocalo partners is contingent on both parties remaining connected to the lease.
Fat City will keep you updated on this story as details emerge.
